05.15.07: Your laugh for the day:
A woman walked into the kitchen to find her husband stalking around with a fly swatter.
"What are you doing?" She asked.
"Hunting Flies" He responded.
"Oh. Killing any?" She asked.
"Yep, 3 males, 2 Females," he replied.
Intrigued, she asked. "How can you tell
He responded, "3 were on a beer can, 2 were on the phone." |
This is weird... I thought only "pit bulls" wouldn't release bites? There have been quite a few attacks by German shepherds and malinois police dogs on their handler's children lately. This one is from today:

The two year old daughter of a Wylie police officer is hospitalized after a police dog bit her on the head and wouldn’t let go. The dog was living with the family of Officer Matt Miller who was training him to be part of the Wylie K-9 unit. Rexy is a one and a half year old German Shepard. The dog will spend two weeks in quarantine to make sure he doesn’t have rabies. Animal control officers say Rexy does not appear to be vicious.
Rexy was three weeks into his 13 week police training when he bit the child Wednesday. Wylie’s police chief says Rexy recently learned how to bite, but only on the arm. Officer Miller pulled the dog off his daughter when Rexy would not release his bite. That’s when the dog tore the little girl’s scalp. Sources close to Officer Miller’s family say the toddler had surgery Friday morning but there is no word on her condition.
The Wylie Police Department will return Rexy to the company where the department purchased him. |
05.14.07: Interesting stuff. Read this about Muslim cab drivers not allowing seeing eye dogs in their cabs... there are some pretty funny comments under it. Did you know that some muslims believe that a dog cannot be kept in the house or "angels will not enter". Some religion!
05.06.07: My Gosh! Sweden is actually, (be still my heart!) considering BANNING STUPID DOG OWNERS!!! Wow is all I can say. It is about time!
ban unsuitable dog owners

The government is to propose banning certain individuals from owning dogs.
In a proposal to tackle the problem of dangerous dogs, Agriculture Minister Eskil Erlandsson has made a four-step recommendation.
Any dogs that show signs of posing a danger must be kept on a leash at all times. If this does not prove sufficient, a muzzle is to be used.
A third step involves removing the dog from its owner. Finally, any owners deemed inappropriate are to be barred from owning dogs in the future.
Despite the fact that fighting dogs are over-represented in dog-bite statistics, a ban on individual breeds is not under consideration.
While fighting dogs make up just one percent of all dogs registered in Sweden, ten percent of attacks reported to police involve these breeds. According to Eskil Erlandsson, however, the problem lies with individual owners rather than specific breeds.
The government is to put forwards its bill on the responsibilities of dog-owners before the summer.
05.04.07: WARNING: FOX NEWS is looking for someone to "debate" the "pit bull issue" with anti-pit bull talk show hosts. Several people I know (including myself) have refused when approached. Anyone familiar with FOX NEWS will understand why. They are not interested in education. I have informed them that if they are interested in doing a useful, intelligent piece for the public, I would be available, but not for a silly "debate" with people shouting over each other. Been there, done that. Why oh why does the media set its standards so low?
What's missing from these news articles?
Gee, the word "PIT BULL" in the headlines. Why? Because it wasn't a pit bull, it was a little terrier crossbreed. So why it when a PIT BULL does something it is worthy of being in the headline, but not for other dogs? I see this over and over. It is called "media bias". By the way, check out the really asinine attitude of the officer in charge here. Wow, what a jerk! CLICK HERE. Want more proof about "media bias"? Another story today about an irresponsible owner of cane corso mastiffs that were shot and killed by police after being allowed to run at large and attack a man and his dog. NO mention of breed in headline... CLICK HERE. And gee, yet ANOTHER non breed specific headline today, about a toddler who got 300 stitches in her face from a wandering Doberman. CLICK HERE. And, all in the same day, here is a very interesting article from the SF area again, where a "very rare" dog attack occured! Be prepared to laugh your buns off! According to a "Marin Humane Society official" dogs running out of their yard and biting someone in the leg is "very rare"!!! That sure is news to animal control officers around the world! Wow! And these are the "experts!" So, again, another dog attack with out the breed names in the headlines - you guessed it, because it is not a "pit bull"! CLICK HERE. Can't help adding one more today. (These are all from today, random search). CLICK HERE.
And goodness, seems San Fran mayor Gavin Newsome's plan to "stop dog attacks"by the forced altering of American pit bulls is not stopping "dog attacks" after all. I wonder why! Poor, weak laws against dangerous DOG OWNERS and lack of enforcement, and not arresting someone for assault when they allow their dogs to injure people, hum... these seem to be the reasons for dog attack... CLICK HERE
And check out this out-of-control German shepherd story... CLICK HERE
And this VERY sad story about a child treated "like a dog". Not that a dog SHOULD be treated like this - but sadly, so many are. Stuck in a crate and shocked with a shock collar... people are upset when it happens to a child... but how sad for our canine friends as well... CLICK HERE.
05.03.07: Check out this cute video - HERE.
Here is the question of the day: (and I quote) "When are you going to bread Dirk"? Seriously, you gotta love those half a sentence emails that ask the Big Questions! "How do you stop dog aggression?" "How do you train a dog?" "Where can I find a good dog?"
I don't mean to mock anyone, but first, if you can't spell "breed", don't do it. I am not a good speller myself, but seriously folks! Second, if you are asking someone something like "is your dog at stud", try to sound a bit intelligent, interested in the breed, and I don't know, maybe even include your name or state you live in?
Also, if you are interested in my dogs, do me the favor of reading enough of my website to know that I have emphatically stated on every page that has anything to do with my dogs, that I don't sell dogs to the public. If you have even casually glimpsed my site, you should have gotten that message.
So, if the person who sent me the email about "breading" (and frying?) Dirk, please, go back and take a look at Dirk's pages. It clearly states that he is NOT AT PUBLIC STUD, NOR ARE ANY OF HIS PUPS FOR SALE. Why? Because in case anyone hasn't noticed, there is a HUGE pit bull overpopulation problem out there. We may lose our breed because of it. Of course, if no one breeds, there would be no purebred American pit bulls. I want to see the breed stewarded through to the next generation in tact. I do NOT want only "blue whales" to be the "American pit bulls" of the next decade. However, I feel serious breeders are keeping their dogs in their own yards, and the yards of their partners, and not selling dogs to the public. There are plenty of rescue dogs needing good homes for those wanting pets. This is a time of crises folks. I certainly hope to live to see the day when the American pit bull is rare again! How nice that would be! No dogs dying in shelters. Responsible breeders having waiting lists for well bred pups. Like I said, I hope I live to see it!
05.02.07: Well, if you ever needed any proof that the "Dangerous Dog Act" (the name says it all!) in the UK is a foolish approach to community safety, this latest article absolutely shows it! More discussion is spent on making excuses for the dog because it is an "English" breed then dealing with issues which could prevent a similar attack. Of course, because this savage bite to the face was not dealt by a "pit bull" it is considered a "freak accident" instead of a "savage attack". WHO CARES WHAT KENNEL CLUB BREED THE ANIMAL IS! WHERE WERE THE PARENTS!
Brother of dog attack girl died four years ago
THE dog attack which left a two-year-old girl with serious facial injuries was the second tragedy to strike her family in four years.
The toddler was savaged by what police believe is a Staffordshire bull terrier, as she visited friends in Borrowdale Avenue, Shadsworth, Blackburn.
Now it has been revealed that her mother, Katie Holt, of Devon Road, Blackburn, lost her two-month-old young son in tragic circumstances in 2003.
In March, 2003 she was living with her partner in Cornelian Street, Blackburn, when baby Josh Allison died whilst he slept alongside his mother.
Miss Holt later told an inquest that she had taken her son to bed at 11.30pm and had fallen asleep with the baby in the crook of her arm.
She said she woke up at 6.30am to find him lifeless on top of a duvet.
Coroner Michael Singleton recorded an open verdict after hearing that a cause of death could not be ascertained.
He said that Josh could have died because of over laying in which the parent accidentally rolls on top of the child in bed.
After the dog attack, on Friday, the girl, who has not been named by police, was taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital but later transferred to the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital, Pendlebury, were her condition was described as "very poorly."
Police said her injuries were serious but not life threatening.
The dog is in a secure kennel where it will be kept until investigations have been completed. The owners have agreed that the animal should be put down.
The Staffordshire bull terrier is not listed under the Dangerous Dogs Act, which restricts ownership and breeding of certain breeds.
In this case, police said all the information they had about the animal pointed towards it being a non-agressive animal.
Det Sgt Jon Holmes said: "This appears to have been an unexplained freak occurance and nothing at this time indicates any unreasonable behaviour.
"There have not been any arrests and I don't anticipate any.
"The indications are that this dog is an English Staffordshire bull terrier, which if this is the case, would not be governed by the Dangerous Dogs Act.
"We are currently seeking a second, expert opinion and until then we won't be destroying the dog."

04.27.07: Do you STILL think PETA helps animals? Well, if so, read this: I urge everyone (as a past PETA member!) to do everything possible to spread the truth about the whack jobs behind PETA. They not only kill dogs and kittens and dump them in dumpsters behind other businesses, but they spend time and money to try and ban dog breeds. They DO NOT WANT YOU TO OWN A DOG!
| PETA URGES DORCHESTER COUNTY TO BAN PIT BULLS IN WAKE OF FATAL ATTACK ON TODDLER |
‘Brian’s Law’ Could Prevent Future Tragedies, Says Group
For Immediate Release:
April 27, 2007

Dorchester County, S.C. — This morning, PETA sent an urgent letter to Dorchester County Council Chair Larry Hargett and other council members urging them to follow the lead of dozens of other jurisdictions across the country by banning or strictly regulating pit bull ownership. The appeal follows news reports of an April 23 incident in which a pit bull fatally attacked 1 ½-year-old Brian Palmer in his mother’s home. News sources state that the dog—who also killed a family cat just weeks earlier—was typically confined to a utility room in the home before she escaped on Monday.
PETA is asking the Dorchester County Council to ban the acquisition of pit bulls and strictly regulate grandfathered ownership of pit bulls currently living in homes. PETA—which has offered to assist the county in drafting the legislation—also suggests that the ordinance be named "Brian’s Law" in honor of the victim.
PETA points out that that its offices are inundated with calls about pit bulls who injure and sometimes kill people after being neglected, abused, or used for fighting. Usually, people who acquire pit bulls see them as living weapons and put the animals in heavy chains, taunt them into aggressive behavior, and leave them out in all weather extremes in order to "toughen" them.
Communities across the country—including Denver, Colo.; Dade County, Fla.; Kansas City, Kan.; and Boston, Mass.—have banned or regulated pit bull ownership. Because unsterilized dogs are almost three times more likely to attack than dogs who have been spayed or neutered, California recently passed a law allowing jurisdictions within the state to mandate the spaying and neutering of pit bulls. Continuous chaining is also a major cause of aggression in pit bulls and other breeds. Dogs are pack animals, and they become frustrated when they are chained or confined alone. This frustration often turns into aggression.
"More and more communities are realizing that the best way to prevent another tragic death like Brian’s is to enact a ban on acquiring pit bulls," says PETA Director Daphna Nachminovitch. "We urge Dorchester County to join their ranks by immediately introducing this urgently needed legislation."
PETA’s letter to the Dorchester County Council is available upon request. For more information, please visit HelpingAnimals.com.

04.25.07: Another great working pit bull! (And another ignorant, biased dog trainer...)
 |
After a while, you stop noticing the stares, said Melvin"Shorty" Rossi, an actor and former stuntman who stands about 4 feet
tall.
When his 70-pound American pit bull, Hercules, is around, the
attention is impossible to ignore.
Hercules isn't a tough-guy accessory - he's a working dog. Since
suffering a spinal injury during stunt work, Rossi has been unable to
carry heavy loads. Hercules, a certified service dog fitted with a
pair of saddlebags, does it for him.
But Rossi, 38, has had a difficult time with people who think service
dogs are limited to guide dogs for the blind.
"Most people have a problem with Hercules, because he's a pit bull,"
Rossi said.
Other than guide dogs for the visually and hearing-impaired, there
are dogs that pull wheelchairs and dogs that are trained to warn
their owners of oncoming epileptic seizures.
The Americans with Disabilities Act prohibits discrimination against
service dogs on the basis of breed. And while most trainers favor
Labradors and golden retrievers, a service dog can be of any breed -
Rossi just likes pit bulls.
Rossi, who has worked on such films as "How the Grinch Stole
Christmas" and "Daddy Day Care," is also the co-owner of Short
Entertainment, a company that books little people for film,
television, private parties and special occasions. Rossi was at
Robert J. Cabral Station in Stockton last week, shooting footage for
a TV show about the lives of little people.
Living in San Francisco, Los Angeles and Stockton, Rossi rides the
Altamont Commuter Express train several times a week. The ACE, he
said, has been more hospitable to Hercules, one of four dogs he
adopted from a pit bull rescue organization, than most public
transportation agencies.
ACE spokesman Thomas Reeves said that after the initial shock of
having a pit bull on board, ACE passengers and employees have become
comfortable with Rossi and his canine posse.
In fact, riders required more calming than the stoic Hercules did,
Reeves said.
"They'd never seen a pit bull assistance dog before," Reeves said."(We had) to squash our interpretations of what a pit bull is."
Karyl Carmignani, a spokeswoman for Canine Companions for
Independence, a nonprofit organization that provides service dog
training and support, said public reaction to the breed can be a
drawback to using pit bulls as service animals. An ideal service dog
is one that allows its owner a seamless acceptance into society, she
said.
"I'm not saying a pit bull can't be trained," she said. "But it's a
lot easier than people who are inherently frightened of them can be
trained to accept them."
Under the Americans with Disabilities Act, any establishment that
serves the public must allow people with disabilities to bring their
service animals anywhere customers are normally allowed to go.
Robyn James, president of St. Louis-based Support Dogs Inc., said a
service dog can be ejected or denied access only if it has become a
legitimate nuisance. The standard is high, she said. The dog has to
be "out of control." Some example behaviors include jumping on
counters or barking incessantly, she said.
Otherwise well-meaning people can be unintentionally hurtful when
they lavish attention on a friendly service dog, James cautioned.
"They ignore the person (with the disability) and go straight for the
dog," she said.
But Rossi believes the compact and powerful breed is perfect for him. |

03.22.07: Golden Retriever involved in severe mauling
Three-year-old Breanna Webster may have scars for the rest of her life.
Her neighbor's dog attacked her, Tuesday evening.
Little Breanna Webster was playing with a dog most people would consider family-friendly, a golden retriever.
"This dog has destroyed this little girl's life," said Eve Melend, Breanna's aunt.
Breanna was at Jennifer Hollaway's home, when she apparently stepped on the dog's paw.
"The surgeon told me that was the worst dog bite he's ever seen in his life," said Melend.
The attack took off most of Breanna's upper lip.
Hollaway admitted that wasn't the first time the dog had attacked a child.
She said she always tells children under the age of 10 to stay away from him, "because he'll bite you."
The dog is in quarantine with Mesquite Animal Control, and the agency will likely force the dog to be deemed dangerous and forced outside the city limits.
Breanna didn't get that message, and now her family wants the dog put down.
"I don't want that dog released to do it to another child," said Twyla Teague, Breanna's grandmother.
Hollaway understands, even if it pains her.
"I would want them to put him down, but he's mine. So I have to make that decision," she said.
Breanna is getting treatment at Children's Medical Center in Dallas.
She faces years of surgeries to repair her face.
An account has been set up with Bank of America to help cover Breanna's medical expenses.
It's called the Breanna Webster Medical Fund.
