THE
WORKING PIT BULL: By Diane Jessup 317 pages, hardback.
ISBN # 0-7938-0190-7 This book was written when the only books available on the breed pictured
beat-up looking dogs on heavy chains while
the author extolled the virtues of pit bulls as tools
for maiming and destroying other dogs. In the battle
against BSL, these books were and are being used against the breed. In an effort to get something positive published and in the hands of law makers and humane
officers, Diane Jessup quickly produced The Working
Pit Bull. This book points out how
the breed, in responsible hands, can be so much more. TWPB has tons of
color pictures of dogs working and playing and is
a book to show to people who say the pit bull is only
good for fighting. Those who are looking for ways
to help the breed should consider donating one to
their local library. |

COLBY'S
BOOK OF THE AMERICAN PIT BULL TERRIER: by Louis
Colby and Diane Jessup 192 pages, hardback. ISBN#
0-7938-2091-X A classic for history buffs! Louis
Colby's love and knowledge of the history of this
breed makes this book special. If you love pictures
of old-time dogs you will love this book. Interesting
history of the Colby family; at one time the
Colby family was associated with dog fighting, however
these days the dogs are finding homes with folks
who want a good natured family pet with an interesting
history. This should be required reading for people becoming involved with the breed today - this book shows them what a "real" pit bull looks like. |

THE
PIT BULL FACT AND FABLE: by K.S. Matz 236 pages.
Softback. ISBN# 0-932501-00-1 Out of print now. A nice book. You may not agree with everything
the author says, but you have to respect the amount
of work that went into this history. Worth finding
if you can. Better than most, handicapped only by the rather primitive printing job on it and a lack of good pictures. |

A
COMPLETE HISTORY OF FIGHTING DOGS by Mike Homan 288 pages Hardback. ISBN# 1582451281
Simply one of the best books on the bulldog available - and THE best book on the history of the breed. This guy did not rehash
all the old stuff - he brings a plethora of new material
and pictures to the fancy. No pit bull library will be complete without this book, and no serious research on the breed can be done without this book. Buy it. Read it. Understand it. |

THE
APBT HANDBOOK: By Joe Stahlkuppe. 140 pages, softcover. ISBN# 0764112333 Another "serial" book. The publisher says: Owners of this assertive breed are advised on the importance of rigorous but humane obedience training. All other aspects of purchase, health care, feeding, and housing are discussed in detail. Titles in Barron's popular Pet Handbooks series instruct pet owners on health care, proper feeding and housing, and other facts important to owners and their pets.
This author tends to represent the breed as hard headed and dominant, a thing I have not found in training and putting many titles on the dogs over the past 20 years. Perhaps it is how you approach the breed and its training? |

HOW
TO TRAIN YOR APBT:
Liz Palika. 96 pages, softcover. ISBN# 0793836638 This is a TFH "How to" series, so a generic book by an author who has written several in the series on different breeds. I'm not a fan of generic serial books. |

|
DOGS OF VELVET AND STEEL: by Bob Stevens 469 pages hardcover, ISBN# 0615118356 Well, what can I say? From the fighting dogs on the cover you might get a hint where this author is coming from. Mr. Stevens was busted in 2005 for selling illegal depictions of dog fighting with his videos one of which was called "Pick a winna". Another showed a dog slowly tearing a barnyard pig's lower jaw off, eventually killing the animal. He also advocated the use of pit bulls as attack dogs. So, you decide if you think you can learn anything constructive from this guy. |
 |
|
THE COMPLETE GAMEDOG: by Ed and Chris Faron 396 pages, hardcover, ISBN # (unknown) The title pretty well warns you about what you are in for. This is a book by and for dog fighters and wannabes. Plenty of useful information if you don't mind wading through the crap. If you are a pet owner, and treat your dog as a companion and family member, then this book will not be useful, but if you maintain your dogs more like livestock, then these folk's tips will come in handy. I found it interesting to read the stories about dog fights told by those involved in the activity. Stories about aggressive man-biters abound, which these authors don't seem to think is a problem. For some quotes from this book, see the DOGFIGHTING section of this site. |

THE
ESSENTIAL PIT BULL: Ian Dunbar. 92 pages, softcover. ISBN# 1582450226 I believe Ian is new to pit bull ownership; however,
he has ever been a friend to this breed. Haven't seen
this book yet. Ian is a nice guy so I would recommend
it anyway. Please beware of one thing though: Ian
doesn't believe much in "inborn drive"...
many first time pit bull owners who don't understand
drive, and who think it is "all how you raise
them" end up getting one big wake up call when
their dog grows up to be a bulldog. Understanding "inborn drive" is a BIG PART of successful pit bull ownership... |

IT'S THE PITS by Paul 107 180 pages, softcover. ISBN
1-55022-663-0 This is an interesting
"today" kinda book, put together by graphic
artists, and it shows. It is full of art work, art
shots, and off the wall interviews and perspectives.

man's frustration over the way his little nanny
dog has been perceived in the street. " Buy

THIS IS THE AMERICAN PIT BULL TERRIER: by Richard Stratton. 176 pages, Hardback. ISBN# 0876666608 This book came out in 1977, and I can't help but think what a different situation the breed might be in today if this, the only real book on the breed in the early days of the "fad" had not promoted dog fighting so heavily. Stratton does a good job of making dog fighting "sexy" and seductive to an audience which includes those who may not be mature enough to understand compassion or who thrill to cruelty. What if this book had promoted the breed as the gentle, loving pet it is, with dog fighting hopefully in its past? We will never know. |

THE BOOK OF THE AMERICAN PIT BULL TERRIER: by Richard Stratton. 349 pages, Hardback. ISBN# 0866227199 Like all of Statton's books, this one will be of primary interest to two sorts of fanciers: the wannabe dog fighters and those who like to look at pictures of pit bulls. This book is not for the reader who doesn't want to read about dogs struggling across pits with broken shoulders. Stratton seems an intelligent man, and tells a good story, but this book will be painful to those who enjoy their pets as companions. |

THE TRUTH ABOUT THE AMERICAN PIT BULL TERRIER: by Richard Stratton. 320 pages, Hardback. ISBN# 0866226389 Like all of Statton's books, this one will be of primary interest to two sorts of fanciers: the wannabe dog fighters and those who like to look at pictures of pit bulls. Stratton is straight forward in saying he enjoys watching dogs destroy each other in fights, and presents himself honestly as someone who promotes dog fighting. What I don't respect is his repeated failed attempts to make "dogmen" out as wonderful, hardworking "average Joes" when the reality just doesn't jive with that picture. PIT BULL IT
BULLS FOR DUMMIES: D. Caroline, PhD. 240 pages, softcover. ISBN # 0764552910 I haven't
seen this book but the review on Amazon.com seems
to tell it like it is. Reprinted here for your convenience."Not
quite what I expected..., May 12, 2001 Reviewer: Nunya
Business from Pennsylvania, USA. A decent book, with
some good advice, and some good PR for the breed.
However, this author is the same one who has written
several other 'Breed for Dummies' books, and apparently
hasn't had a lot of experience with all of them. This
book would've been much better had it been written
by someone with a lot of experience in the breed,
like Stratton or Jessup. The training section with
simplistic and very biased, the author didn't even
mention alternate training methods, and gave no suggestions
for what to do if this method doesn't work. The breed
specific information in this book can be found on
many websites and most pit bull books, and the non-breed
specific information is available in any all-breed
dog book. This book probably isn't worth the money." |

FIGHTING
FOR LIFE: THE AMERICAN BULL TERRIER: AN ENDANGERED
SPECIES: by Frank Rocca. Hardcover. ISBN# 0941223027 Dog fighters, like any other population of people, come in a variety of "types". One type is the rambling philosopher which feels they have the only real "take" on the world and "truth", a word they seem to like a lot. When talking about dogs, Rocca's book is lucid, when speaking about life in general, you get the feeling he is either on - or should be on - some kind of medication. Rocca's book is only about fighting dogs, and is primarily a remarkable recounting of match times and results. The title would lead you to believe it may have something to do with the current struggle by responsible owners to keep their dogs from being banned off the face of the planet, but it is most assuredly not. It is about people who breed litters like we change underwear. If you are curious about where the thousands and thousands of pit bulls dying in shelters have come from - consider the number of litters discussed in this book... As a hardcore student of the breed, I found this the best of the "dog fighting" books, because he is honest about all the dishonesty behind pedigrees, and his information seems well researched. |

|
AMERICAN GAMENESS AND HERITAGE - VOLUME 1 REDNECKS: by Don Mayfield softcover, 155 pages ISBN # - none. Oh boy! This one's a doosey! Very little about dogs, primarily the ramblings of someone who has had too much of - something. Repetitious and seriously whacko, the author talks mostly about outcrossed breeding (he refers often to Jesus as the best example of an "outcross breeding", meaning a god x human breeding) and inbreeding. His favorite words, which appear about 10 times per small page, are "truth", "core" and "Texas" (usually in bold). Most disturbing to me was his repeated reference to the fact that he thinks dogs are agents of the devil, and that bringing them into the house and making them pets is being duped by the devil. Like I said, it's pretty wild! Of interest only for references to falsification of breedings of noted stud dogs - but who could know if they are true? |

FIGHTING DOG BREEDS: by Dieter Fleig 224 pages, hardcover, ISBN# 079380499X This book was written by a German, and is made humerous by many not well hidden "slams" at the English people as "cruel". Fleig knows his stuff, and is a tireless advocate of breeding dogs for function - not show wins. He has much wisdom to give. His other book - History of the Fighting Breeds is better. But they are a pair that a serious student of the breed should have. Homan's Complete History of Fighting Dogs is better, but these are good books.

PIT BULLS AND TENACIOUS GUARD DOGS: Carl Semencic hardcover, ISBN# 0-86622-639-7 This book appears to be out of print, and for some reason absolutely unfathomable to me, is commanding huge prices as a used book. This is a picture book only, with no real information and no historical information that isn't rehashed. Not to mention, no one who admires the pit bull would ever lump it together with "guard dogs". Typical, mentally sound pit bulls are friendly to strangers unless their owner is threatened. |

THE WORLD OF FIGHTING DOGS: by Carl Semencic 288 pages hardcover, ISBN# 0-87666-566-0 This book came out in 1984. It was rather unique for its time, but the author seemed to have put it together in an awful hurry, as the picture quality is hideous. The photo on the title page is blurry! He also didn't have time to decide if he is really "for or against" dog fighting. He says he is, but that is a hard conclusion to come to when reading the book. This book gave many people their first look at pit bull spin off "breeds" like the American Bulldog, the Bandog and Olde Bulldogge. Twenty years out, it is interesting for historical purposes. |

THE PIT BULL DILEMMA: Donald Clifford, Hardcover 1990. ISBN# 9-914783-36-X Donald Clifford was an animal researcher in Ohio that had a lively horror of the pit bull breed. His phobia turned to fascination, which resulted in his keeping news clippings on every (bad) thing that any dog he considered a "pit bull" did. It is full of errors and down right lies; example being a "pit bull fatality" in Seattle, Washington that never occurred.). BANDIT - DOSSIER OF A DANGEROUS DOG: by Vickie Hearne 320 pages hardcover/softcover, ISBN# 0060995041 The late Ms. Hearne was a friend of mine, so I'll go easy. This book is difficult to read, Vicki had a tough writing style. This is one of those books you either love or hate. It was written with passion and a love for the breed (the dog may have been an American Bulldog) but in a way, the dog she picked to champion was a very bad example of the breed. Bandit was a biter; he bit his owner, he bit other people. I wish Vickie had chosen a temperamentally sound dog to bring to public attention, Lord knows, plenty of great, non biting dogs are being killed just for being pit bulls. I also take exception to Vickie putting the blame on Bandit's crappy temperament on everything but bad genetics and careless owners. She tries too hard to make the dog and its owners "victims". |

THE DOGFIGHTER: by 210 pages softcover, ISBN# 0517694646 Interesting in that it was written when Dobermans were the fad panic breed. In fact, it has a Malamute on the front cover! Dobermans, mastiffs and staffordshires battle it out in the midwest. |
