FEEDING THE DOG: HOW HARD CAN IT BE?

Like any aspects of dog care, for every sensible or well researched statement about canine nutrition there are dozens of myths and oft repeated untruths.

When shopping for dog food, the dog's owner is faced with a confusing array of information and misinformation, fads, as well as advertising aimed at making the dog's food enticing to the human buying it.

A dog is a carnivore, but they are not a wolf.

WHAT DOES A DOG REALLY NEED?

Dogs need meat. They are carnivores.

They don't need wheat, soy, carrots, peas, brown rice or yogurt.

Dogs have been domesticated for many thousands of years, and they have survived on diets far from the natural one their ancestors enjoyed.

In the middle ages packs of hunting hounds lived primarily on potatoes and oatmeal mush.

WHAT I FEED

I've done a fair share of research over the 35 years I've been training performance dogs. I've wanted to feed my dogs the very best available, so that they could in turn enjoy good health and perform to their best ability. It does no good to put the very best training on a dog with the very best genetics and then fuel that animal with less than the best food available.

Over the years I've fed a variety of feeds with a variety of results. Some foods have given me good, basic nutrition and performance. A couple have made my dogs sick every time fed, and two have given me "stop-the-presses" positive results.

I feed Timberwolf Wild & Natural, however my dogs are sport and working animals and have high caloric needs. Older and retired dogs eat Cosco Kirkland brand mixed with Timberwolf. Timberwolf is simply the best dog food I have found. The improvement in my dog's coats has been nothing short of amazing.

Here is a list of a few of the dog foods I have tried and how I rate them:

Excellent Choice
Decent Food
Very Poor/Harmful
Timberwolf Wild & Natural
Eagle Pack Performance
Cosco Kirkland Brand
Purina One
Solid Gold (anything)
Purina Dog Chow
