The "Nearly" Forgotten Fifty

A pit bull, her feet, stomach and genital area burned by urine and
covered in the feces which fill her crate at "Every Dog Needs A Home".
These dogs would have been forgotten forever if not for the work of Kris
Crawford and Desiree Bender.

Below is the statement of a woman volunteering with Pasado Safe Haven in Louisiana during the Katrina operation. Her name is being withheld for her safety at this time.

FYI, I was with Pasado's in Louisiana as a volunteer and I would say they showed almost a criminal neglect in sending the pit bulls to Arkansas. They had no care to go and see the facility, sent the driver on the road to the facility even when Tammy told them on the phone that she could no longer take the dogs, and ignored warnings by groups that there was suspicion of abuse of the animals. The red flags could not have been more obvious. Plus, a number of us met Tammy and whereas it seemed she did love animals, it was clear she had more than one screw loose, which was a big red flag as to ?how could this woman run an organized operation as she promoted?

Obviously given the pit bull breed, the first thing one does is guarantee the safety of the home the dogs will be placed in. There were at least three highly aggressive dogs shipped along with over fifty wonderful pets. With a bit of obedience training, almost any of those over fifty dogs could make wonderful additions to someone's home. And how many rescues have obedience training?? Moreover, Pasado's sent two young college age kids to make sure the dogs got there safely - obviously either the kids neglected to discover anything about the facility or they discovered the horrid conditions there and Pasado's decided to ignore the issue.

All Pasado's staff wanted last week was to clean up their stuff and go home - animals be damned. Us volunteers stayed on to the end helping with the animals and prayed our instincts about this EDNA place were wrong -- but apparently they weren't. I am heartsick and hope to go down and help care for those babies I grew to know and love while I was down there. The Pasado staff had no desire to actually work with the pit bull population - they left that for the volunteers. They were rejoicing and partying the night before the dogs shipped out, whereas those of us who worked closely with the pits were very sad to see our dog friends go. Pasado's staff just wanted the publicity from doing rescues in New Orleans, and maybe bringing home some nice fluffy dogs to show for their efforts. And get lots of donations because of how wonderful they were to go to help in New Orleans. Just wanted to puff themselves up. I am sure they are going to milk this situation in Arkansas and try to twist it into another way to make themselves look like heroes, not bastards.
