A Note About
Kris Crawford... |
Kris
Crawford is the person who is directly responsible for saving all
the animals at the EDNAH facility.
Kris
became aware of the bad reputation of this facility, and that the
local humane society had grave concerns. She has worked tirelessly
for weeks now to get Desiree, myself, the HSUS and others working
together to bring to light the hideous conditions at EDNAH and the
refusal of Pasado (and other "humane" organizations) to
do a simple home check on this facility.
I
don't know Kris real well, but I do know she works tirelessly for
the pit bull breed. She and her famous Search and Rescue Dogs have
been deployed on hundreds of searches including the Lacy Peterson
case and for NASA on the the Columbia Shuttle disaster recovery
effort. She and her dogs have been honored for their work with children
and the disabled.
I
have added this special note as there are a few unhappy people who
resent and/or are jealous of the recognition Kris has gotten in
her work with our breed. Everyone who achieves any level
of success in anything will attract detractors - sadly, that is
human nature. Just as I have my detractors, Kris has hers. I only
hope that as you explore the world of the American pit bull on the
internet, you will understand that pettiness and jealousy will rear
its ugly head now and then. Please consider the source, and consider
why the source would want to discredit those who work positively
for the breed.

PLEASE!
Take a minute to contact Sheriff Montgomery and thank him
for trying to help these dogs. He has received over 200 death threats
from "EDNAH" supporters. His email is: bcso@centurytel.net
In
August, thousands of pit bulldogs were displaced by Hurricane
Katrina. Abandoned by owners, most of whom did not even
put a collar with ID on their dog, these animals were rescued
by wonderful folks who gave their time and effort to save
the dogs and relieve their suffering.
Many
of the rescue groups who went to the Gulf Coast were "no-kill",
meaning they do not believe in euthanizing animals. Even
when there is no appropriate place for them to go.
Rescue
groups took the cute, friendly, sweet, adoptable pit bulldogs
home. These lucky dogs are being absorbed into the already
massive number of dogs which local pit bull rescues cannot
handle. |
Pit
bull dead in crate when Desiree Bender arrived to help the
living at EDNAH. |
Left
behind were a couple hundred pit bulls , many of which had
less than stellar temperaments, and most which would be
difficult if not impossible for a reputable rescue to place.
These
dogs had already endured two months of being crated 24 hours
a day, with no owners showing up to claim them, and no reputable
rescues able to absorb them.
At this
point, "no-kill" groups started looking for places
to dump these dogs. After all, it is one thing to take a
cute, fluffy puppy into a no-kill, but hard to place dogs
"mess up the works" of the "no-kill"
mentality. Easy to blame the dogs, as PETA does, when in
reality the problem is that good intentions have replaced
good sense. |

The "Sanctuary" that Pasado left their 50 pit
bulls at. Is this better than humane euthanasia? |
Pasado
Safe Haven, in Washington State, evidently did not want
the 50 pit bulls on their 80 acre sanctuary, and made plans
to send them to "Every Dog Needs A Home" in Arkansas,
a "sanctuary" with a troubled past. I made numerous
email appeals, as did Desiree Bender, of Where Angels Run
Rescue (in Arkansas) to Mark Steinway, co-founder of Pasado's,
and their "Humane Investigator". In these emails
we pleaded with Mark not to send the dogs to this location
without doing the very minimum ANY rescue group would do
before placing pit bulls - a home check. I was concerned
primarily about the facilities and the number of people
on staff to care for the 50 pit bulls, plus the hundreds
of dogs already said to be housed there. |
Conditions
at the "sanctuary". Dozens of dogs were running
loose in this filth, and made rescue efforts difficult when
trying to move the pit bulls. |
At
right is an email sent by Mark Steinway, co-founder of Pasado
Safe Haven to Desiree Bender, when she asked him to look
into this facility, as the local humane society did not
feel EDNAH was legitimate. My emails were met with similar
hostility. Bottom line, I was told by Mark Steinway that
they would send "two volunteers" with the dogs
who would make sure conditions were fine.
It
seems these "rescue" groups were more interested
in getting praise as being "heroes" then in long
term care of the animals they "rescued" when the
camera crews have gone home. Despite repeated pleas to carefully
check out this location, Pasado Safe Haven chose to leave
the dogs at this filthy, overcrowded, understaffed site.
They say they were "duped". Duped by who? They
simply refuse to take responsiblity for dumping those dogs.
They say they are going to move them now. Where? We know
they won't listen to concerned voices... who will now know
where the Forgotten Fifty are going?
Welcome
to the "No-Kill" world. Where animals suffer so
humans can feel like heroes. |
Desiree, you need to cease
and desist with this character defamation or you will soon
be facing legal action the likes of which you never dreamed
of.
For
all others, I apologize profusely that you are being dragged
into this. Desiree and a few others have persisted on spreading
rumors and unsubstantiated charges against Tammy Hanson
for the last few days since learning of our arrangement
to transfer animals to Tammy. Several of us from Pasado's
have spent hours and hours in recent days TRYING to substantiate
Desiree's charges. They cannot be substantiated. In the
process of speaking to veterinarians familiar with Tammy,
humane societies and other shelters who have firsthand observations
of Tammy’s operation, and animal control officers
who have been to Tammy’s facility, NONE of them have
anything bad to say about Tammy or her shelter.
Tammy
has had to get restraining orders against these people who
keep harassing her. If all of these people would spend ½
the time trying to help the dogs that they spend trying
to stop Tammy from helping the dogs, we wouldn’t be
having this discussion. Desiree, STOP WASTING EVERYONE’S
TIME!
For
the Animals,
Mark Steinway
Co-founder, Pasado's Safe Haven
|
At
this time, we are waiting for the judge to order the release
of the dogs. We are not sure what is going to happen there.
They may be released to Pasado and the other organizations
which dumped them there. I hope they will be humanely euthanized,
as all groups agree, there is no place for these dogs to
go. Pasado Safe Haven staff have been directing criticism
at other rescues not willing to take on these dogs, but
knowing your limit is what keeps a rescuer from becoming
an animal collector.
Pasado
says they are taking the dogs, plus the others. I can only
wonder where. These dogs are truly pawns...
Desiree
Bender, of Where Angels Run Rescue, who almost single handedly
forced this issue to the light of day, will not accept donations
for what she has done. However, she asks that supplies be
sent to the North Central Humane Society, 201 High
Ave Mountain Home, Arkansas, 72653 as they have
helped her very much.

UPDATE: 10/24/05 8 PM Pacific
Kris
Crawford has contacted the HSUS who says they will show
up tomorrow and pay for tents, or a building to move the
dogs into (if they can). They are bringing a legal team,
which in my opinion is the best thing, as I have real concerns
about this small county 's ability to stand up to the high
pressure shizzle they are getting from Bill McLaughlin and
friends. |
Update: 10/25/05
9 AM Pacific Just got off the phone with Kris Crawford
(of Search & Rescue fame) and she has talked this AM
with the sheriff, Desiree, and members of T. Boone Picken's
family. Tammy Hanson has retained an attorney, and luckily
the HSUS's Tammy Hawley is arriving this afternoon and will
go into meeting with the county prosecutor and the sheriff.
I have a bad feeling about this, having lived in Arkansas
for a year... This is a very poor county, and they are getting
threatened with law suits after law suit for doing what
is best for these dogs. The sheriff has gotten over 200
death threats to his home over this case. Unless the HSUS
can step in, the dogs are reportedly going to be turned
back over to Tammy at 4:30 this afternoon. |
Update: 10/25/05
9:22 AM Check out this link
to
local (Seattle) news about Pasado's part in dumping dogs
there. Instead of admitting they messed up and using this
as an educational experience to show why home checks are
so very important, they continue to make lame excuses. |
Update: 10/26/05 3:40 PM Pacific Just
talked with Desiree, things are looking up. There will
be a hearing for Tammy Hanson on Thursday at 4:30 PM.
The "high powered" lawyer someone got for her
has quit... it is assumed the funding dried up suddenly
when someone didn't want to be seen supporting her anymore.
Pasado was going to send their dogs to a less than stellar
kennel in Alabama, but (thankfully) are now sending their
dogs to VilaLobos (Tia's kennel) in California. I know
they will be treated well there, and those that are unsound
will be dealt with realistically. (And that way, Pasado
doesn't have to get its hands dirty). Desiree says the
dogs are clean, dry, medicated if they need it, and the
clean up of dead dogs and filth has begun. This is good
news indeed. Three cheers for Tia for stepping up to stop
the seemingly endless suffering of these poor dogs.
NOTE ADDED: The kennel mentioned above is a puppy mill,
and is NOT "Turtle Moon Rescue". For information
on the good folks at Turtle Moon Rescue go to: http://www.turtlemoonrescue.org

Update: 10/26/05 9:30 PM Pacific
I am trying to find out what will happen to all the other
pit bulls (other than those dumped by Pasados) on the property.
Tammy Hanson evidently stated she specialized in man-biters
and dog aggressive pit bulls (gee, red flag number
one?) So I am wondering about the number of aggressive and
potentially dangerous dogs on her property. Desiree saw
one dog go absolutely ballistic on Tammy when she was there
today picking up some stuff for her court hearing. Our breed
certainly does not need these dogs passed off to well intentioned
but naive and foolish hands, and I don't know of any
reputable pit bull rescue that would mess with man-biters.
Again, thanks to Tia for stepping up and
giving these poor, exhausted dogs a place to go. You should
consider donating to VilaLobos Rescue.
I hope that Pasado Safe Haven (as well
as several other rescues) have learned a valuable life lesson
about HOME CHECKS. I have grave doubts that Pasado will
stop placing blame and pointing fingers long enough to realize
that this is a great opportunity to educate the nation about
just how important home checks are. I can only
hope that they will listen the next time someone tries to
nicely suggest they do a simple homecheck before dumping
dogs anywhere. It is mind blowing to think that our
little three person rescue can pull tax records on each
and every application, and get a home check, and these large,
well funded organizations with large volunteer bases can't
even bother to check out a wild story like Tammy's... Sigh.
Well, I and Recycle-A-Bull Rescue will be working to try
and bring this very important educational angle to the public.
Thanks to all who have been so supportive of the efforts
of Kris, Desiree, myself and the others who tried to warn
Pasado's, and who worked to save the dogs at EDNAH. Stay
tuned for details as they become available. |
Update: 10/27/2005 10 AM Pacific NOTE FROM DESIRESS
BENDER:
Things are getting better for these animals..........
Thanks to everyone's help on the phone, e-mail and on
the ground in Mountain Home.
Kristine Crawford has been an extreme valuable player
in bringing down Tammy Hanson and exposing the real truth.
Kris has worked behind the scenes hours after hours on
the phone and computer helping all of us with this situation.
Kris would not allow me to give up when I saw NO light
at the end of the tunnel. Kris did most of the research
into Ms Hanson and the groups responsible for releasing
animals to Ms Hanson. Kris has been the main contact for
those donating legal advice. Kris has been the main contact
for HSUS in getting equipment donated and on the property.
Without Kris we may have never known the REAL tragedy
that occurred with releasing animals to Ms Hanson. So
please, before you go blasting someone and cursing all
of those that are working their asses off, make sure you
have your facts right. We are all very tired and need
everyone's support.
All volunteers need to go through Kristine Crawford who
is now aiding the HSUS with coordinating the volunteers
at the Hanson property. Thank you Kris for all your hard
work and support. I want to thank everyone for their time
and efforts on shutting down Ms Hanson and getting these
animals to a safe and caring environment. We still have
a long fight in front of us and I could do without the
stress of everyone bickering.
I need everyone to put aside differences and work as ONE
TEAM for the sake of these animals.

UPDATE: 10/27/05 10.08 AM PACIFIC News
article concerning EDNAH trial.
Gamaliel shelter Some dogs can leave, judge says
CHANDRA HUSTON
Bulletin Staff Writer
More than 100 of 477 dogs found at a Gamaliel animal
shelter will begin leaving the property today. District
Judge Van Gearhart ordered Thursday during an emergency
hearing that 104 dogs can be removed from Every Dog Needs
A Home (EDNAH). Most of those dogs were sent to EDNAH
by PasadoRescue, a Seattle, Wash.,-based animal rescue
group.
Approximately 60 people packed the courtroom Thursday
to hear the orders. The judge also noted that the dogs
will remain in the custody of the Baxter County Sheriff's
Office for three weeks. After that time, Prosecutor Ron
Kincade said he hopes to have agreements to place the
remaining dogs in reputable shelters. Kincade said if
placements are not worked out in three weeks another hearing
can be set to determine what to do with the dogs.
"They're (Hansons) not going to be back in the dog
business," he said.
PasadoRescue's Mark Steinway said 25 of their dogs will
be removed from the property today and taken to a facility
in Alabama. [NOTE: Reported to be a puppymill called
Krazy Kaos Kennels... I'm looking into that...]
William Hanson, 41, and wife Tammy, 38, were arrested
a week ago after Baxter County investigators found more
than 450 dogs on their property living in unsanitary conditions.
The Hansons pleaded not guilty Thursday in district court.
Gearhart set the Hansons' trial date for Jan. 16, 2006.
The couple will not be allowed on the property but will
have access to their property today to remove or secure
personal effects. The two or their lawyer will be escorted
by a Baxter County deputy. "We don't want the defendants
there interfering," Kincade said.
Kincade said unfortunately the law has no good resolution
for preserving evidence when animals are involved. "We
want to do what's best for the dogs," he said.

| Update: 10/30/05 1:30 PM PAcific Click
HERE
for news article on what is going on. Just spoke with Desiree.
Things are looking up for the dogs, which are now mostly out
of the crates. Louisiana Humane Society representatives arrived,
and Desiree says they were wonderful folks, willing to admit
they messed up and pleasant to work with. She thinks they
understand now our point about "home-checks". We
can only hope Mark Steinway can figure it out. |
| UPDATE: 10/30/05 9 PM Pacific Well, the
dogs are still sitting in Arkansas. Can't explain all the
insanity right now, but Pasado's Mark Steinway continues to
be a stumbling block for these dogs to go to Tia's facility.
The HSUS has really stepped up and helped folks - I may have
to soften my stance toward these guys! :) Spoke with Tia tonight.
She is tired but still willing to give these poor animals
a place to land and have some semblance of a life. She is
an amazing person; the breed is lucky to have her. |
UPDATE 11/01/05 7 PM Pacific
This is from Desiree Bender: Hey all I wanted
to let everyone know that "Blue Ears" is doing wonderful.
She did leave on a truck back to Tylertown with Elizabeth
who is with the Humane Society of Louisiana. Elizabeth, rep
for Humane Society of Louisiana has been devastated by their
mistake. Elizabeth and Joana were amazing to work with and
they have suffered dearly for their mistake. Unlike Pasado
they were willing to do anything to help their dogs as well
as the many other dogs there. I was hugging both of these
girls from the Humane Society of Louisiana when they left.
I understand mistakes happen but it takes a lot to step up
and undo your mistakes. Elizabeth even got on the internet
to educate herself about animal collectors and their patterns.
Elizabeth is staying in contact with us and I feel sure that
"Blue Ears" may end up with me when I am done here.
She is looking and feeling much better. This picture was taken
Saturday before she left. Thanks for everyone's help and support
through this ordeal.
Thank you to the two wonderful volunteers with Humane Society
of Louisiana, Elizabeth and Joana for stepping up and saving
their dogs.
They are working with Rottie Rescue and pit bull rescuers
in order to get these dogs the help they need.
