Please notice that in March, 1936 the American pit bull was being called "Yankee terrier", "American bullterrier" and "American pit bull terrier". Yet to come, the same year, was "Staffordshire terrier" when the AKC chose to recognize the breed and chose that name. Later still they changed that name to "American Staffordshire terrier". Add to that serious fancier then and now call the dog "pit bull" and "bulldog" and you can see why many people are confused over the breed's name!
