I wasn't looking for a new dog, but on a day when one of my fellow animal control officers brought an 8 weeks old pup - colored just like Dread - and plunked it on my chest as I sat at my desk, well, that as that. He was a really rowdy, grippy, wild little guy, so, having just watched the movie Hellboy, I thought that was a great name for him. Pit bulls remind me of Hellboy - misunderstood and good hearted.
Hellboy grew up to be one of the gentlest souls I've met. It took him 3 years to mature, and loves everyone. He's not bad with other dogs. So much for puppy temperament tests! He has shown a real aptitude for tracking. Because of this, Hellboy and I will explore the world of AKC "variable surface" tracking together. He is also earning his schutzund tracking titles and has earned his AKC Tracking Dog title. Hellboy may be making a debut in early 2009 for his AKC obedience titles. |
When he was 14 months old Hellboy earned his schutzhund "B" title, which allows him to compete in schutzhund tracking tests. The "B" is an obedience/temperament test designed to show that a dog has basic obedience and a sound temperament.

06.04.06: Hellboy really thrilled me his first time out tracking. He earned his "Tracking I" title under an SV German judge with a 96 (V) [excellent] rating. This was a trial I almost didn't enter as Hellboy has not learned to indicate articles completely yet. Even with a couple points off for weak indications, he still scored 96 on a faultless, footstep to footstep track on a turf farm. Way to go Hellboy!
10.01.06: Second time out - Hellboy takes on 475 yards of dry, dry, dry scrub grass, scotchbroom and burned over field for a pass on his first AKC "TD" (tracking dog) test. Hellboy is neutered and shown with an AKC "ILP" number. (He is a rescue dog). Shown here with judges Tannis Witherspoon and Stephanie Gonyeau. Thanks, ladies!
