SEPTEMBER -
TIME FOR FALL KENNEL CARE

With the days still nice and the evenings starting to get a nip to them, it's time to set the dogs up for fall and winter. A little bit of effort can assure your dog(s) are safe, comfortable and healthy through the winter. This is a great time of the year to be outside with your dogs - so have fun!

The Dog House

Fall Check List:

1) Remove all bedding
2) If needed, hose it out then let it dry completely
3) Spray house inside and out with bug spray
4) Refill house with clean, dry chips or grass hay
5) Screw on a chew proof flap

The Dog House
Continued

Here is another view of the best kind of dog house. If your dog is in a muddy area, consider a deck like this. You can also use "stall mats".

There is NO excuse for a poor quality dog house. If you can't afford to build a decent dog house - you can't afford a dog.

The Tether

Fall Check List:

1) Check the dog's neck closely. Check for raw spots. (Upper left)
2) If you use a 2" or wider collar, take it off and check for sores, ticks, burrs, and fungus under it. (Upper right)
3) Make sure the area is free of object the dog can tangle on. (To right)
4) Check all parts and replace any that are worn. Better safe than sorry.

HOW TO WEATHER PROOF A KENNEL FOR UNDER $150!

I live in an area with A LOT of rain. Dreary months of rain where dogs spending time outside are stuck in their dog houses if they want to stay dry. I wanted a way to offer them more dry area to play, walk about or eat a bone in. I located some really well made tarp-type car covers at Cosco for under $150. They came with sides that had windows and doors. They are easily put together by one person. These models are 10' wide by 20' long, and tall enough to go completely over a kennel. Below are some pictures of my kennels, showing these covers. I encourage you to consider putting one over your kennels. They cut wind, keep the dog dry and shed snow. You can open the windows and doors when weather is nice.

Below: Here two of the LawDogUSA kennels are shown with door and screened windows open. I left the back half of the kennels uncovered so the dogs can get some sun. I'm happy to have cover when I am cleaning up, feeding or getting dogs in or out of the kennels.

Hellboy and FreakShow share this kennel (separated when I am not home) which has the back half covered by another of these covers. The kennels are each 7' x 14'. Black stall mats give the dogs a place to lie off the concrete. Notice as weather is nice, window behind the right hand kennel is open.

A nice, cozy kennel. Protection from weather, a raised platform to lie on, an insulated dog house with door (held open in warm weather) and roof. At $150 bucks, even if they fall apart after a year, I can afford to buy a new one next year.
